The place writes the spec

In 2026 a data-center site is defined by two things: power plus permission. Permission is not a checkbox at the end — it is a design input at the start. The front-end inversion is simple to say and hard to do: let the place author the brief before the facility locks it.

The conventional pipeline consults the community after the design is fixed. The place-first pipeline reads the place first — and the design answers to it.

What the inversion costs — and what it buys. The place-first front end is bounded and scheduled: an indicative ~15 months from first conversation to executed covenant (Illustrative — the full schedule is on Our Process), spent from the same budget line conventional projects already spend on siting studies and community relations. The contested conventional path has no such bound: projects sit blocked, litigated, and stalled at interconnect with no scheduled end. Permission, not construction, is the critical path — and the whole stewardship portfolio is small money at facility scale. Calendar spent before FID is cheap; calendar lost after it is ruinous.

A proven method, a new domain

This method has been applied to buildings, districts, and whole watersheds — but never yet to a data center. This reference model pioneers that application. We say so plainly, because an honest first is worth more than a borrowed track record.

Watershed, culture, and ecological memory are not soft context to be managed around. In a place-first pipeline they are hard spec inputs — the same status as grid capacity or fiber routes. The next page shows why: pull one strand of a siting decision, and every other strand moves.
